Dr. Murphy received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Dalhousie in 1994 and went on to complete a General Practice Residency at UBC in 1995. He has a BSc in Physiology from McGill University. 
He practised general dentistry for 21 years before transitioning to full-time teaching at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry. Dr Murphy teaches Biomedical Sciences with a focus on pathophysiology, dental anatomy, evidence-based practice, problem based learning, professionalism, local anaesthesia, and medical emergencies in dentistry.  
He has been the recipient of many UBC Dentistry teaching awards and the W.W. Wood National Dental Teaching Award.
