Professor Emeritus MacEntee is past-president of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, the Geriatric Oral Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research, the International College of Prosthodontists, the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada, and the Vancouver Institute. He received in 2009 the Distinguished Scientist Award for his research in dental geriatrics, and in 2015 became an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. From 2012-2018 he was editor-in-chief of Gerodontology (the international journal of dental geriatrics).

His academic career - as a teacher, a researcher, and a prosthodontist - in the Faculty of Dentistry at UBC focused primarily on the educational needs of dental and dental hygiene students and dentists, and on the health needs of older people. He established with academic colleagues the ELDERS (Elders' Link with Dental Education, Research and Service) Group to provide a trans-professional and multicultural emphasis on the health needs and well-being of people as they grow frail. He received research grants from numerous sources, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (USA); and Health Canada, and has published several textbooks, over 20 book chapters and more than 160 peer-reviewed papers on the measurement, distribution, impact and management of oral disorders in older people.
