Dr Virginia Medwid Diewert recieved her DDS from the University of Alberta in 1966 and her MSc and Orthodontic specialty training at Northwestern University. She has been a member of the Orthodontic teaching and research faculty at UBC since 1971. During this period she has been actively involved in craniofacial biology research and held an MRC Scholar appointment for five years. Dr Diewert's studies, funded primarily by the Medical Reseach Council of Canada and the BC Health Research Foundation, have provided new information about early development of the craniofacial region in humans and experimental models. The studies showed how interuption of certain critical stages in development could contribute to clefting of the lip and the palate.
