Kavita's undergraduate dental education was at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1993. Subsequently, she practiced as a general dentist with the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada, serving in rural health centers and school-based clinics. In 2003 she entered the post-doctoral program in pediatric dentistry at the University of North Carolina. There she earned a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the School of Dentistry, as well as a Master's degree in Public Health from the School of Public Health in 2006. Her first academic appointment was at the University of Kentucky from 2006-2011. She was appointed an assistant professor at UBC in 2011.
