Dr. Luana Carvalho DDS, MSc, PhD

Dr. Luana Carvalho completed her Dental Education at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. She received her D.D.S. degree in 2000, her Master’s degree in Dental Materials 2005 and concluded her Ph.D. in Operative Dentistry in 2014. She is also a certified specialist in Operative Dentistry, with a particular focus on minimally invasive dentistry and excellence in direct and indirect restorations. Dr. Carvalho worked as a clinician in Brazil for more than 15 years and taught Dental Materials and Operative Dentistry at the University of Santa Catarina. During her Ph.D., she conducted an extensive clinical trial to evaluate the behaviour of composite restorations on individuals who smoke.
In 2015, Dr. Carvalho moved to Vancouver, Canada to do her post-doctoral training in Biomaterials at the University of British Columbia. She worked on projects, involving multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration, on different strategies for dental adhesion and the development of novel technologies for dental applications. At that time, she volunteered as a clinical instructor and was appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor to teach Restorative Dentistry for D.M.D. students at UBC Faculty of Dentistry. She was an invited lecturer in the Biomaterials module in the Dental Hygiene course at UBC and an instructor on hands-on courses in Cosmetic Dentistry in Vancouver.
She is a member of the Academy of Dental Materials, the American Association of Dental Education. Dr. Carvalho has peer-reviewed papers on operative dentistry topics published in International Dental Journals, several research abstracts and presented at international conferences around the world. All contributions demonstrate her commitment to Scientific Dentistry. Her research interests include but are not limited to dental adhesion, clinical research, restorative dental materials, dental bleaching, novel technologies for dental applications and smoking effects in dental restorations and more recently, Educational research.
Currently, Dr. Carvalho is an Assistant Professor of Teaching at UBC and the coordinator of the Restorative Dentistry I module. She is also developing Educational research projects at UBC that will contribute to the enhancement of the DMD program.
