Lateral periodontitis

The etiology of lateral periodontitis is identical to that of apical periodontitis. The only difference in pathogenesis is that in lateral periodontitis the stimulation of osteolytic activity takes place through a lateral canal rather than the apical foramen. Local anatomical and ecological factors such as availability of nutrients determine the direction of the infection in the root canal system.
