Controlled clinical comparisons

* This is a virgin field in endodontics. The subjectivity of criteria for assessing success and failure makes comparisons among studies carried out by different investigators impossible.
* Objective, unbiased and reproducible methods for assessing the periapical tissues as a means of rating performance of endodontic materials must be used.
* Digital radiography and other scoring methods have been applied.
* Large-scale, prospective studies on sealers indicate that Ca(OH)2-containing materials and AH26 perform well. Chloroform-based materials may perform less well.
