Pharmacological properties

• Many endodontic sealers contain pharmacologically active substances.
• Eugenol has anodyne, analgesic and antimicrobial properties.
• Calcium hydroxide (Sealapex, Apexit, CRCS) is antimicrobial and may
have hard tissue inducing properties.
• Thymol iodide is in many ZnO-based sealers (Kerr Pulp Canal Sealer,
Endomethasone) and is antibacterial.
• Corticosteroids are in Endométhasone, among other sealers.
• Formaldehyde (paraformaldehyde) is a very potent antimicrobial and
tissue fixative. It occurs in N2, Endomethasone and resorcinol-
formaldehyde pastes.
• Iodine compounds (iodoform) are added to some sealers (Kri paste) and
in some brands of gutta-percha.
