Split tooth

When the fracture line in a cracked tooth advances apically resulting in two separate tooth fragments, the correct diagnosis is then split tooth. Orientation is similar to crack tooth mesio-distal, and the affected teeth are premolars and molars. Although not directly visible in the radiographs, split tooth usually causes much stronger and more acute symptoms than cracked tooth, and is easy to daignose clinically.
There is no effective treatment for split tooth, and usually both fragments have to be extracted.
