External inflammatory root resorption

External inflammatory root resorption is a frequent complication after intrusion trauma, sometimes also after other types of luxation injuries. The resorption typically involves large areas of the root surface. Infection in the necrotic pulp is regarded as the main reason for continuing progress of the resorption. External inflammatory root resorption proceeds rapidly, and the whole tooth may be destroyed in just a few weeks or even less.
