Allergens in endodontic materials

* Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde ranks relatively high on the list of common allergens of importance in allergic dermatitis.

* Eugenol: Eugenol is an allergen which is also used in many cosmetic formulations. There are case reports of allergic reactions to eugenol-containing root canal sealers.

* Gutta-percha: There is a possibility that gutta-percha may be a cross-reaction allergen with latex. Case reports have suggested that this may have been the cause of immediate hypersensitivity in patients.

* Colophony (rosin): Rosin occurs in cosmetics and skin care products and may cause sensitization and allergic reactions. It is questionable if cases have been documented from its use in endodontics.

* Epoxy compounds: Epoxy compounds are very potent allergens which induce sensitization. There are case reports also from its use in endodontics.
