* The so-called ’guinea-pig maximization test’ is frequently applied to dental, including endodontic, materials and their
components. The test applies the substance to the skin of guinea-pigs in a way which maximizes the substance’s ability to induce
an immunological skin reaction on subsequent challenge. This ability to induce a skin reaction is considered to be associated
with the ability to induce allergy in humans.
* Endodontic materials have been tested in this model. Endomethasone, ProcoSol (both ZnO-eugenol sealers), AH26 and Kloroperka were
all capable of inducing allergic-type reactions in Guinea-pigs.
