Aseptics: Purpose & Role

The purpose and aim of aseptic procedures is to inhibit external microbial contamination of the root canal (mainly from the oral cavity) during and after root canal treatment.

As microbes are the main reason for endodontic diseases, high quality in endodontic asepsis is of the highest importance for successful endodontic therapy. It is important to understand that aseptic procedures must begin before instrumentation (preparatory procedures) and that they must continue the whole life-time of the tooth (tight coronal seal to prevent reinfection).
