Rubber dam

Use of rubber dam (rubber-dam) is mandatory in endodontic treatment for the following reasons: 1) hygiene, 2) safety, 3) effectiveness.

As microbial infection/contamination of the root canal system is the main etiologic factor in endodontic diseases, it is understandable that necessary measures have to be taken to eliminate the microbes and to keep reinfection out of the canal. This is best done by the use of rubber dam throughout the endodontic treatment. However, at the first appointment the dam may be placed after finding the canal openings to minimize the risk for perforations while searching for the canals.

A feared although rare complication in endodontics is aspiration of instruments by the patient. This can be most effectively inhibited by rubber-dam.

Endodontic treatment typically requires a considerable time to complete. Use of rubber dam helps the patient to relax, gives the dentist a peace to work, and contributes to more effective and rapid treatment.
