Tooth mobility

Tooth mobility is tested by holding the crown tightly with forefinger and thumb, and trying to move the tooth in both horizontal and vertical directions. Sometimes two mirror handles can be used to achieve the same result. It is important always to test several teeth for comparison and reference.

Increased tooth mobility is usually a result of advanced marginal periodontitis, but can also be caused by acute apical periodontitis or severe occlusal interference. In the case of a root fracture, tooth mobility may also be increased. Clear increase of vertical mobility has been traditionally regarded as a sign of poor prognosis.
