Sensitivity to heat

The heat test is usually performed with gutta-percha that is warmed with a flame and then pressed with an instrument against the tooth surface, near the cervical margin. Excessive heating must be avoided to prevent damage to the pulp. Some authorities advise placing a very thin smear of vaseline/petroleum jelly on the tooth to prevent the gutta-percha from sticking to the tooth.

A negative test result may indicate pulpal necrosis.
