Permanent restoration

Permanent restoration is the final seal for the success in endodontic therapy. Leakage studies have clearly demonstrated that root fillings that are exposed to the oral cavity without protection of the top filling may become contaminated by oral bacteria already within just 2 - 3 weeks. Temporary restorations have a limited life time, particularly on root filled teeth and should be replaced by a permanent restoration without unnecessary delay.
In order to ensure long-term protection against leakage under the restoration, the pulp chamber must be carefully cleaned from all gutta-percha and sealer, as these are a frequent cause for leakage and reinfection years after root filling. IRM and composite materials with acid etching and bonding are good alternatives for filling the pulp chamber, depending on the selection of the permanent restoration and need to strengthen the tooth.
