Abscesses - Prophylaxis

Spontaneous abscess formation before treatment cannot, of course, be prevented. However, the following guidelines may help to reduce the incidence of flare-ups during treatment:

1) avoid over-instrumentation

2) use the crown-down approach and frequent irrigation

3) avoid vigorous instrumentation in the apical canal especially at the start of cleaning and shaping procedures

4) use ultrasound with irrigation
