Recognition of the importance of correct instrumentation length is the key to avoiding overinstrumentation. Proper choice of radiographic techniques together with careful observation of the radiographs is the cornerstone for succesful determination of canal length. If the difference between the instrument position and correct length is more than 2 to 3 millimeters, a new radiograph should be taken. Modern multifrequency apex locators that function reliably in a moist environment offer a valuable addition to the endodontic instrumentarium.
