Maxillary anatomy

The maxillary sinus, the nasal cavity, and the nasopalatine canal are the most important structures in the upper jaw that may project onto or close to dental structures when dental films are used in endodontic radiography. Depending on the angle of the x-rays penetrating the tissues and meeting the film, these structures show a great deal of variation radiographically. Being familiar with the normal variation of maxillary structures in dental radiographs is essential for correct and reliable radiographic diagnosis.
