Purpose

Root filling has the following main purposes:
1) It inhibits the access of antigenic material from the oral cavity to the root canal and periapical area
2) It inhibits the diffusion of antigenic material from the pocket area through the root into the root canal
3) It inhibits the growth of periapical tissue into the root canal that might cause resorption or serve as nutrients for possible residual microbes in the root canal system.
