The main goal of warm gutta-percha technic is to increase the flow of gutta-percha to all the small irregularities of the root canal system. The gutta-percha is warmed either using mechanical friction or specific heating blocks, or by preheated condensers, depending on the system. While the root fillings made with warm gutta-percha technic may look quite impressive in the radiograph, concerns have been expressed on two aspects in particular: insufficient control of overfilling in some cases, and possible shrinkage after filling, if precautions to compensate for shrinkage are not taken.
