Resilon

Resilon is a new, FDA approved thermoplastic synthetic polymer based root canal filling material. Based on polymers of polyester, Resilon contains bioactive glass and radiopaque fillers (Bioactive Glass, Bismuth Oxychloride and Barium Sulphate; 65% filler by weight). It is a fully polymerized resin, slightly stiffer than gutta-percha, but it can go around curves as well due to the filler components that make it flexible. It is slightly more radio-opaque than gutta-percha. It has handling properties close to gutta-percha, and for retreatment purposes may be softened with heat, or dissolved with solvents like chloroform. Resilon is produced to master cones in all ISO sizes and accessory cones in different sizes are also available. For warm thermoplasticized techniques Resilon Pellets are available, which can be used for the backfill, e.g. using Obtura II gun.

Resilon root filling material is used together with Epiphany primer and a dual-cure resin sealer. Epiphany primer is a self-etch primer, which contains sulfonic acid terminated functional monomer, HEMA, water, and polymerization initiator. The sealer is of calcium hydroxide, barium sulfate, barium glass and silica, having a 70% filler content by weight.

Sodium hypochlorite should not be used as the final rinse of the canal as it may negatively affect sealer bond. Instead, 17% EDTA or chlorhexidine should be used, Epiphany Primer is applied to the dentin walls of the root canals just before filling with Resilon.
