Gutta-percha is by far the most popular root filling material. Gutta-percha makes the core of the root filling, and sealers are used together with gutta-percha to fill the small irregularities in the root canal system where gutta-percha fails to penetrate, as well as the possible gaps between gutta-percha and the dentine wall. In cold gutta-percha technics one or more gutta-percha points and sealer are condensed into the canal using hand- or finger pluggers and spreaders. When used properly, all these technics can produce a tight seal, although single cone technics has been criticized for possible higher risk of leakage because of thicker sealer layer.
