Hyperparathyroidism is a disease where the parathyroid glands produce and excrete parathyroid hormone in excess. This may be due to hyperplasia of the gland tissue or a tumour. In the early stages, a general increase in the radiolucency of the bone may be observed. In the later stages, well-defined radiolucent lesions may develop in various bones, including the jaws. When superimposed over root apices radiographically, these lesions may resemble apical periodontitis.
