Apical implantitis is a microbial infection around the apical end of an implant. It is a rare situation, and is probably caused by contamination of the implant or the working area during placement of the implant. Radiographically it looks like apical periodontitis. Radiographs above show apical implantitis projecting on the apical region of the neighbouring tooth, a mandibular canine. The canine (above) is vital, symptomfree and healthy.
