Osteomyelitis of the jaws is, nowadays, a rare disease. It almost always affects the mandible. Osteomyelitis may originate from trauma in the facial region or from a dental abscess. Clinically, osteomyelitis is classified into several types.
Compared with apical periodontitis, osteomyelitis usually affects larger areas. A variation between radiopaque and radiolucent areas often seen in osteomyelitis creates a moth-eaten or foggy appearance radiographically.
