Severe occlusal interferences

Traumatic occlusion due to severe occlusal interferences may cause an inflammatory reaction at the root apex. This may result in a widened PDL apically, often with rough borders. The mobility of the involved tooth is often increased and the tooth may be sensitive (tender) to vertical percussion. Pulp sensibility testing and careful investigation of the occlusion and the radiographs is needed for diagnosis. If traumatic occlusion is suspected as the reason for symptoms and widened PDL, the occlusion must be adjusted and the tooth reviewed again after one to three weeks, at which time a diagnosis or decision for further review will be made.
